Some people use the terms “dry skin” and “dehydrated skin” interchangeably. But the two are actually very different.

Dry skin is a skin type that’s inherited through your genetics. It means that your skin doesn’t produce enough natural oils to stay properly hydrated. While dry skin can be improved with oil-infused skincare products, it can’t be changed outright.

Dehydrated skin, on the other hand, is a skin condition. It occurs when the water content of your skin is depleted by factors such as the weather, seasonal changes, an unhealthy diet, or other lifestyle choices. As such, oily or combination skin can also become dehydrated. Dehydrated skin is a temporary condition that can be resolved with lifestyle changes and skincare treatments.

Signs that your skin is dehydrated

If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, it’s a sign that your skin might be dehydrated:

  • Dull, flaky skin and dark circles under the eyes – A lack of moisture makes it hard for your skin to perform essential functions. Since cell turnover is reduced, you’re unable to shed your outermost layers of skin. This can also lead to a worn-out appearance, congestion and clogged pores.
  • Itchy skin – Patches of your skin might start to itch. You might also experience flaking.
  • Sensitive skin – When your skin is dehydrated, your body is less able to protect itself from environmental stress. Bacteria, pollution and other substances can begin to affect your skin, causing redness and irritation.
  • Wrinkles and fine lines – Dehydrated skin accelerates the ageing process, giving you a much older appearance.

Treatments for dehydrated skin

At the Laser & Skin Group we offer a wide range of treatments to rehydrate your skin and take away your unpleasant symptoms. These include skin boosters, as well as the Profhilo treatment.
